The town was settled by European Americans in the late 1800s and was officially incorporated in 1911. While there are many theories about where the name, Bolivia, came from, many believe it has to do with the post office that has been in operation since 1892. Many boxes being shipped from the area said “Bolivia,” referring to the country in South America, and the residents liked it enough to adopt it.
